Have you ever thought where the color of your skin can get you? I often find myself wondering where in the social pyramid I would be if the color of my skin was different. Being asian american, I find my self in the lower part of the middle class living in a good neighborhood. But, I wonder where I my family and I would be, what we would be doing, and what types of advantages or disadvantages we would have if we were white, black, latino, and so on. It is clear that your skin tone has effect on what happens to you.
who they are going to be interacting with. Whether or not you want to believe that there are advantages to having a certain skin tone, there is. Having white skin in 2016 comes with a lot of advantages from being able to secure a job faster to finding a home. Being white comes with a positive outlook from people around because we are raised to learn that white equals good. When it comes to police interactions, it is less likely that there will be brute force used by cops. With jobs, white people have an upper hand when it comes to competition due to passive racism and because we are subconsciously told that "white is good." It is a completely different story when color is put into the equation. Colored people have many disadvantages that white people do not have. We are not raised to think that color is good but we are taught that we should be careful and alert when we are around someone with colored skin. People with color have to put more effort into getting jobs because there are more variables then just what they have on resume. For example, they have to prove to the interviewer that they are more than qualified by utilizing all their references and past experiences even more. When it comes to finding living spaces it is harder because the realtor or land lord already has a preset opinion due to skin tones and have to prove that they can provide a monthly check. It is also more likely for police to be on alert and be ready to fire when confronted by people with colored skin.
Growing up an asian, I had different experiences as my white friends had. I did not have the resources that they got such as sports clubs, summer camps, and the boy scouts. I grew up with my parents enforcing me to get good grades and lear instruments. The resources that I was using were more towards school and going towards a future that was built upon the other asian families my parents had confronted. Having my skin tone, I did not have as many advantages as the rest of my white friends. As I was getting older I saw the advantages I had dwindle away because racial discrimination was becoming more and more of a thing that was put around me. It makes me wonder if we can live in a world where color does not exist. So that certain people do not have an upper hand on anyone. This certain topic should be looked into more by people to make it widely know so that we can tackle it and make a difference.
